One. Then Stop.

ONE. THEN STOP.

You changed lanes too many times.
Trivial to some,
Unbearable to me.

I kept shouting at you in my head,
But waited to release a feeble demand
Later.

We got home but I never relaxed.
You played music entirely too loud,
Annoyed by the sounds of others.

Like a child throwing a tantrum while drowning.

How I cannot wait to leave here.
Even if that means leaving alone.

The All-Consuming Love Affair

The All-Consuming Love Affair

The all-seeing
All-consuming
Love affair.

Step right up to see the wonder of the
Disappearing Man

He couldn’t leave his demons behind
He couldn’t leave Her

And so
They ate him

He tried to run
But they hung on,
Barnacles to a pier,
Taking bite after bite

And as he shrank
He realized that they weren’t eating him
But his demons.

So, he cut them off.
Knowing that he’d grow back
Stronger
Healthier

Without.

And he could finally stop running.

Piecemeal

PIECEMEAL

I wake but keep my eyes closed
struggling to find a comfortable position.
I give up, and rise to make the bed,
converting it back to a couch.

I resolve to eat the fruit left in the fridge for breakfast
but end up with a bowl of cereal, instead.
I wander the outskirts of the internet for awhile,
then decide to visit the library.

I shuffle through the graphic novels,
then down to the oversized books
where I browse full-color plates of
Van Gogh, Kandinsky, and Patrick Heron.

I find a beautiful whimsy and magic in the
Blues, Greens, and Yellows of Van Gogh’s palate.

I have some emails to attend to,
But rather sit in the sun and read a comic picked from the stacks.

Later, I spend some time writing,
then make dinner.
I look up recipes for peasant bread
but I am missing several ingredients.

The day ends with a documentary
about Man’s trip to the Moon,
after which, I listen to the pulsing of Coltrane.
Both offer a sense of awe and magic.

Our First Breakfast

Our First Breakfast

Our first breakfast together was at Choux Factory
along 1st Avenue near 87th.

You had a small coffee and decided against a brownie.
I need my morning caffeine, first -- you said.
I ordered a small green tea and a chocolate croissant.

The morning felt cold and fresh,
though I was still judging by LA standards.
You mentioned that it was one of the
last Beautiful Days of the season.

We leaned across the table to kiss,
then you left for work,

while I roamed the basement stacks at Strand.
I picked up a book that said we over-estimate our talent
and abilities
because facing our flaws is too difficult.
Only the Depressed are Realists.

The place was crowded with hipsters from NYU
who thought Sylvia Plath was the greatest thing.
I got annoyed with them, and left
to find leather boots for the encroaching winter.
Nothing fit and everything was too expensive.

Coming home, I got off the E line before my usual stop
to pick up some Thai food.
I spent the next few hours thinking about my eventual Death
and what I should do beforehand.
You text me to say that Bossa Nova wasn’t your thing,
but that American Imperialism was, in fact,
justified Exceptionalism.
We made a few more jokes, then said goodnight.

Ghost Town

GHOST TOWN

Sometimes I stop and the engine catches up
I remember the life I picked up too quick and fled
I left the cables, the nodes, hanging
Unhooked
Like those textbooks left strewn open
On the abandoned school desks of Chernobyl.

It is dead now.
The moments when I stop,
I feel myself begin to crumble,
And I hurry to hold it together,
But the pain lingers,
The mistakes still haunt.

Wyatt Esther And The Burning Christmas Tree

Wyatt And Esther And The Burning Christmas Tree

Manhattan in the East 90s
The palisades of the Park rising towards 110th Street
Starbucks on 96th and Madison
The Episcopal retreat’s library on 95th
Names like Madison, Lexington….Mulholland

Brisk Fall air
The earthy color palate of the leaves in October and November

We’d walk across the park to the Upper West Side
Such a foreign land to us
We were foreign there too,
Strangers
Tourists
Exploring

The Whole Foods on 97th and Columbus
It supplied us a Thanksgiving

You were right, we never did holidays Together (Beyachad)
We couldn’t hold it together long enough,
Not like those leaves who wait every year for
October
And November

Line And Dot

Line And Dot

The LINE is an infinite beam
Continuing without end in both directions
But, holy, the conundrum of the RAY

An infinite beam with a terminus
Both LINE and RAY are
Infinite in duration, but
The RAY begins
or ends
from a single point.

A single cause that perpetrates
unimpeded
a set of effects for eternity
AND
true too,
An infinite set of results
Drawn from a single input.

The History of All Things
Begun with a single point.

The Distance of A to B

THE DISTANCE OF A FROM B

You can read this introduction quick or slow
The same way you can read life.
Quick,
like an empty highway,
just You trying to get from point A to point B,
task to task,
goal to goal,
book to book,
without stopping to take in
a beautiful field,
purple mountains lining the distance,
clouds as fluffed and perfectly formed
as a new pillow.
Without slowing to rest at a roadside café,
stretch your legs
and process the journey thus far.
Quick, just to finish the trip,
scale the height,
and move to the next
without enjoying the view
from its peak.
Slow,
if you take the jammed packed highway,
on purpose.
Packed with each vehicle picking up dust,
like a million individual thoughts racing
through synapses and axons – new connections forming
at every juncture.
Highways filled with thoughts heading from
their own A to their own B.
Roses smelled, and coffee savored.
Slow, if you want to enjoy the journey –
counting and analyzing each passing car,
each passing word --
unfazed by the ambiguous length,
and excited by the prospect of
a Point B to reveal itself
only further down the road.

10:24am/9-4-2011

I believe my desire to be an entrepreneur comes from two places. First, my love of experimentation, creativity, and doing something completely new. Second, is my disdain for being told what to do, and being told how to live. This is clearly tied to my first reason, as anyone who believes they have the answer or thinks they hold the Truth is a joke, liar, or both in my eyes.

However, with this being said, I have had a fear of success for most a my life. I rebel against those above me, push against them, plot my overthrow, and when the opportunity for success finally rears its head, I become paralyzed. Either that, or I've been weaving in my own failure the entire time.

I've never quite understood my fear of success, but I think I reached an illuminating realization today. I've always wanted to do my own thing because I never believed the truth or validity of others. I don't think they're living their lives perfectly, so why are they telling me how to live mine. Thus, I've sought my own truth and my own destiny. However, when I finally reach the turning point from follower to leader, from dependent to independent, the paralyzing clarity of my own shortcomings grips me. Now, if I am to strike out against the authority that holds me and pursue my own truth and infallibility, then understanding my own weaknesses is devastating. This is not to say that I am not right, however. Or that I am not better than what came before. In fact, I usually am. We find an edge, grab on to it, and let it pull us closer to The Truth. But the fear of success is really a lack of confidence. The acceptance of my own flaws, but the confidence to know that I am still right. That I can still lead even though I am not perfect. Because no one is perfect, or ever will be. We are only a step closer to it than those before us.

Thus, when I see this roadblock on the road before me, I begin sowing the seeds of my own downfall as proof that I am not perfect. But this is foolish. I must maintain confidence that will I am not perfect, I am an improvement on what have experienced before.

12:33pm/8-23-11

E-mailing people and trying to be friends as if I had any. Must learn to be graceful. Must learn how to talk and relate to people better. So many interesting people around me, I want to learn about them and hear their ideas and opinions.
11:30am/8-23-11

After all that has happened with Sarah, and the long silence, I still feel the desire to know her. Deeply. Find out who she is under all the layers, and why she is so damaged. I have no doubt that most of this impulse comes from loneliness and lust. I also believe that I see her as a sort of mirror for myself: uncovering the source of her scars may reveal something about my own.

The Future Is Unwritten

It makes me physically ill to hear you’re sleeping with someone else.

Literally; physically ill.

I’ve spent the last few months quite alone in this new city,

Down and out, at the very moment when I needed you most.

Yes, I understand that I was the one who left you – but only physically.

To hear that you’ve moved on,

To hear that you’ve fallen for someone new,

To hear that he makes you happy,

That he makes you feel passion,

That he makes you feel anything keeps me up at night,

Tearing at my heart, eating at my mind,

Destroying me

like a hungry lion

Ravaging its lifeless prey.

I know that I should move on too,

I know that the image of you in my head,

The memories I keep,

The fantasy I’ve developed,

Is just that.

And inn a way, you’ve come to symbolize every comfort I left,

Everything I love,

And the idea of Home.

I should move forward,

Focus on the present,

Plan for the future,

But not dwell in the Past.

It hurts me to admit,

But save your youthful voice and giggling laugh on the phone,

All that is you, all that is us, is in the Past.

So we can stay friends,

If that’s what you want,

If that’s what I want,

If that’s what is best,

But I must find something new.

I must live my life here – in this new city,

In this new life,

That you are not a part of.

You will always hold a place in my heart,

A piece of my soul

Forever owned by, and aligned with, you.

All the things you taught me,

All the things I felt,

All the things we were together,

There is no question that the flame will never die out,

Because you were my first love,

The first time I felt passion,

The first time I was

As comfortable together

As I was alone,

The first time I touched Happiness, Maturity, Love, Understanding.

And if the circumstances are right again,

If the opportunity ever arises once more,

We may be together yet;

The Future Is Unwritten.

Shiver Sever

Like an amputee

A part of me has been unwillingly removed

Severed from my aching body.

And just like an amputee

The phantom pains keep me up at night.

And the realization of the lose more

Painful

Than the loss itself.

The memory of the limb

More useful

More holy

Than the limb itself.

The inability for reconciliation.

Time that marches ahead with

Two Solid Feet.

And the Limb

Who has found a new body

To attach to

Without remorse for the old.

Red Fox Hawk Eyes

RED FOX HAWK EYES

We forget that Independence is an unflattering trait

But an essential one nonetheless

Those truly Independent

Are those who don’t listen

Who realize that we are all

Nervous

Anxious

Frightened by failures and shame

Those truly Independent

Are those who don’t waiver

Who realize that life is full of

Failure

and Shame

Full of those steering you astray

Whether they mean to or not

We are truly Independent

When the words of others

Flow off us like mist

When the sharpened arrows of

Loved Ones

and Enemies alike

bounce off our skin

without drawing blood

or change

or reaction

We are all the Idiot

filled with

Sound and Fury

Signifying Nothing

Saying

Nothing

and those truly Independent

are those who don’t listen

Alexander the Great and Pliny The Younger

ALEXANDER THE GREAT AND PLINY THE YOUNGER

What is meant by changing the World

What is required of those who do

Is it conscious

Is it solitary

Is it active

Where lays the Passion

of Beauty and Art

Where hides the Quest

for glory and eternity

Does Immortality Stick

In words that evaporate

In sculptures that crumble

In knowledge that spreads

What is meant by

Each Plays His Part

And what is required of those who do

Society is arranged in
an Hierarchy
and we are Forced to take
our place in it.
We are
Mentally Conditioned
by
Culture
and
Religion
to follow an accepted Order --
a World View.
As:
A Whole
as Parts
as Individuals
in every denomination
in every level
Equilibrium must be maintained
between so many factors
...
(Happiness, Lust, Spirituality,
Safety, Humanity and Machine)
...
that a slight change causes
agitation and consequence.

This energy affects
more change
in the Equilibrium
and the chain
repeats
through infinity.

To be alive Today
is to be alive when
Faith and Rationale
Want and Satisfaction
Human and Machine
are in flux.
There is no one
Outside
of the System,
operating
Outside the System,
who was Born and Matured
in the System.

The evolution of Humanity
is in the shifting of forces.

Nautilus Shell

NAUTILUS SHELL

Memories as cells

dropping into the Ether.
Spinning.
Life always spinning.
Cells towards Eternity.
Life as revelation.

You. You. And Utmost You.

Time slips and blows away.
Like dust off our faces.
Blown into color.
Pink. Green. Blue Color.

I want to love you forever
and Talk in code.
Whispering through the darkness.

The Golden Compass
that will align all things.

A backwards E

A BACKWARDS E

I am depressed without you --

I want to get up and scream.

Who do I call?

Who do I touch?

How can I avoid wasting time?

You are the First answer

the Premier solution

to challenges of meaning

and of purpose.

I explode whimsically in your presence.

The COLOR of your SKIN

your HAIR

your EYES (eje)

are a miracle to

AWE

for eternity.

No one talks fish better.

No One

curls ideas into fanciful discoveries

or sarcastic yet heart-warming jokes

like you.

You are my support that never buckles.

You are my body that always embraces.

You are my flame that continually grows.

Life Is A Construction Site

LIFE IS A CONSTRUCTION SITE

Creative output is dry.

My mind feels like it

unravels

a little more each day.

I feel my body is falling apart

Never healthy, never strong.

My teeth rot in my mouth –

no matter what I do.

This feeling of stuck,

of gloom,

of clouds blocking the sun,

of moving / but not going forward,

can never disappear for too long.

So I waste another day

doing nothing,

breath in more smog

from the LA air,

turn up the happiest

music I can find,

and feel my chest

squeeze a little tighter.

Keep The Left Centered

KEEP THE LEFT CENTERED

Ordered pizza for late-night delivery –

Arrived at 12:15am.

I paused the movie.

The man at the door must have been at least 70.

His skin was heavy. He looked tired.

I wondered what sort of society would allow this.

I couldn’t stand to give a large tip and humiliate him more.

I finished the pizza and ate an orange.

The movie ended.

Reflections of an Atheist

REFLECTIONS OF AN ATHEIST

An

Old Chevy

Turned the corner

before the light

Turned green

It was

THEN

that

I realized

there are two (2) kinds of

Atheists:

I. those who believe that some questions do not have answers

II. and those who do not worry themselves with the questions at all

I watched a movie that

played out

in Black-And-White

fra g me nt s

and wondered…

if I

D

R

E

A

M

enough

in the same room

will it leave a dust

?

Throughout the day

I get in the habit of

thinking

and

acting

too fast

to no real benefit –

all the while, thinking

I’m going crazy

and losing a certain

demeanor

in the process

Some days never change – no matter how hard we try

we are bound to waste them.

And if we count up all those days, how much shorter have we lived?

While I Wait For The Messiah

WHILE I WAIT FOR THE MESSIAH

I wait for the Messiah and spend an hour in front of the TV.

My posture slack and hair greasy.

I watch the PBS Newshour and Charlie Rose from the night before.

The phone rings. A quick chat with a friend. We attempt to meet later, but I already know it will fall through.

The cat walks by, sniffs at my feet, and lays in the square of warm light by the glass door.

Talk of Haitian orphans adopted in Denver. I fast forward to a conversation about the banks.

Too big to fail. Too big to jail.

A tiny spider runs down the side wall.

Salinger is dead. The Messiah has already come for him.

I listen to jazz.

The ink in my pen runs out.

I am thirsty and have nothing to do.
